Course Summary
This grade 1 music theory course covers the topics set out in the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) syllabus.
This is an entry level exam/course and is ideal if you have recently begun learning to read printed music or are keen to discover more about how music "works"
It is also important to listen to all the musical examples, including your own answers to the exercises.
Step-by-step guidance making tricky concepts clear.
Accessible and practical, this course will open the door for you to more in-depth study of music theory.
This course will give you a thorough preparation in the basics of music theory, including:
→ note and rest values
→ reading notes in the treble and bass clefs
→ sharps, flats and naturals
→ simple time signatures
→ major scales, tones and semitones
→ intervals and tonic triads
Course length: c. 1 hour of video tutorials

- → I graduated with a degree in music, (specialising in musicology), from the University of Leeds in 1995.
- → I hold both diplomas in music theory from Trinity College London AmusTCL (distinction) and LmusTCL.
- → I also hold Grade 8 Composition (Distinction) from LCM.
- → I teach woodwind and piano (and theory!) in South Cambridgeshire as a private and visiting music teacher, and also in a volunteer role at the local music workshop.
