This grade 4 music theory course covers the topics set out in the Trinity College London syllabus.
This is an intermediate level exam/course and is ideal if you have recently studied for your Grade 3 Music Theory exam.

The exam consists of:
- Unusual time signatures 5/8, 7/8 and 5/4, and the grouping of notes within them
- Alto clef, and transcription between the clefs
- Major and minor (harmonic and melodic) scales and keys up to three sharps/flats
- The chromatic scale
- All intervals up to an octave
- Tonic, dominant and subdominant triads in all inversions, and dominant 7th chords
- Chords in SATB
- The plagal cadence
- Transposing at the 4th/5th
- Writing a rhythm and setting words to a rhythm
- Foreign musical terms, symbols and ornaments
- General knowledge about the some instruments

We’ve been using MMT since I stumbled upon it when my son was doing Grade 1. He’s now preparing to take Grade 4 and we’re back for more! Must say I’m really impressed with the general tonality and approach to theory on the site it really is very good and much better than most of the printed material I’ve paid for! Music theory can seem very dry and ABRSM’s own theory teaching approach is very prescriptive in comparison to yours. I think your approach is more fun and easily digested. Last night we watched the ‘writing a rhythm’ video – I feel my son is now really understanding what this is all about
