If you have already successfully studied the material for grades 1-4 ABRSM music theory you are ready for the "normal" grade 5 course, which will focus on the topics added in the grade 5 syllabus.
You do not need to have passed the exams for the earlier grades, but you do need to have studied the topics and have a good grasp of them.
If you are going straight in at grade 5 without studying the earlier grades, you should sign up for the Grade 5 Crash Course. This revises all the topics from the earlier grades as well as teaching you the topics specific to grade 5. Please note: you should be able to read music at a minimum of grade 3 on your instrument in order to manage this course.

- → I graduated with a degree in music, (specialising in musicology), from the University of Leeds in 1995.
- → I hold both diplomas in music theory from Trinity College London AmusTCL (distinction) and LmusTCL.
- → I also hold Grade 8 Composition (Distinction) from LCM.
- → I teach woodwind and piano (and theory!) in South Cambridgeshire as a private and visiting music teacher, and also in a volunteer role at the local music workshop.

I just thought I’d let you know that I got the results of the ABRSM Grade 5 theory exam & I managed to achieve full marks, 75/75! Can’t quite believe it, I thought I may have made a few silly mistakes! Anyway, just a quick thanks for your help & responding to any questions I had - I appreciate I may have had a few more questions than most… 😂
